UAE Rescues 24 Crew Members After Oil Tanker Collision Near Strait of Hormuz
ABU DHABI – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) coast guard successfully evacuated 24 crew members from the oil tanker ADALYNN after a maritime collision in the Gulf of Oman, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the UAE National Guard, the rescued individuals were safely transported to Khor Fakkan Port using specialized search and rescue vessels.
British maritime security company Ambrey had earlier reported an incident approximately 22 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan. The company clarified that the incident was not linked to any security threat.
Sources within the shipping industry informed Reuters that a single vessel was involved in a collision with two other ships in the heavily trafficked maritime corridor. While no details have been released about the exact cause of the collision, the timing coincides with rising regional tensions.
The incident comes amid ongoing military exchanges between Iran and Israel, now entering their fifth consecutive day of conflict. Israel launched a broad military operation on Friday, which it claims was aimed at halting Iran’s potential development of nuclear weapons.
Maritime security experts have also reported a sharp increase in electronic interference affecting the navigation systems of commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters. These disturbances are said to be affecting the secure passage of vessels through one of the globe’s most critical oil transit routes.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage situated between Oman and Iran, connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is considered a vital global energy chokepoint. According to energy data firm Vortexa, between 17.8 million and 20.8 million barrels of oil, condensates, and refined fuels passed through the strait daily from early 2022 until last month—equating to roughly 20% of global oil consumption.
As of early Tuesday, neither the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor Khor Fakkan Container Terminal had responded to Reuters’ requests for comment.
