Former Sindh Governor Kamal Azfar Passes Away at 95

KARACHI (May 26, 2025) – Kamaluddin Azfar, a veteran PPP leader and former Sindh Governor, died in Karachi on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 95.

A Distinguished Career in Law and Politics

  • Education & Early Career: Azfar completed his studies at Government College, Lahore, and pursued law at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a barrister at London’s Inner Temple before returning to Pakistan to practice in Karachi.
  • Political Rise: Joining the PPP in the early 1970s, he served as Sindh’s Finance Minister and later as Federal Minister for Local Government and Rural Development. In 1995, Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto selected him to serve as the Governor of Sindh.

Contributions to Sindh and Karachi

Azfar earned the nickname “son of Karachi” for his dedicated efforts to advance affordable housing projects in the city’s Lines Area. He also helped strengthen local governance, working closely with Bhutto on administrative reforms.

Author and Scholar

A respected writer, he contributed to major works including Pakistan: Political and Constitutional Dilemmas (1987), Asian Drama Revisited (1992), Good Governance (1994), and Waters of Lahore (2014). Early in his career, he assisted Nobel laureate Gunnar Myrdal for The Asian Drama project

Passing & Tributes

Azfar passed away at Ziauddin Hospital in Clifton Funeral arrangements are pending, awaiting the return of his children from abroad.

  • CM Murad Ali Shah lauded his wisdom and lifelong services to Sindh.
  • PPP Senator Sherry Rehman referred to him as a “dedicated activist and seasoned politician” who had a close working relationship with Benazir Bhutto.
  • President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also offered heartfelt condolences.
